Scottish ocean energy pioneers Mocean Energy and Aberdeen-headquartered leading global controls technology specialists Proserv have signed a working partnership agreement with the aim of accelerating the development of renewables solutions for subsea operations.

Together the two companies will plan and execute new technology for offshore operators in the renewables sector, setting out detailed development plans to collaborate and implement solutions aimed at accelerating the decarbonisation of offshore energy.

Specifically, Proserv and Mocean Energy will explore opportunities connected with the provision of renewable power for subsea control systems.

Ultimately the two companies will work to develop a feasible, low-carbon, cost effective alternative to the umbilical power cables traditionally used by the energy sector.

Subject to further agreements, this customisable ocean power solution, powered solely by wave, solar and battery technologies, will be used to help reduce operational emissions from developments across the globe.

Proserv is a leading provider of innovative controls technologies to energy companies for life of field, whereas Mocean Energy is committed to designing and delivering ocean energy converters to provide clean, carbon-free, renewable energy.

Mocean Energy has already demonstrated the effectiveness of its wave and solar powered Blue X wave energy converter prototype – which can be paired with battery storage to deliver reliable green power – demonstrated through the Renewables for Subsea Power programme, and its first commercial product, Blue Star, is ready for deployment.

Cameron McNatt, Managing Director at Mocean Energy, said: “This MoU will go a long way to accelerating the development of the innovative technologies needed to deliver low carbon solutions for the offshore energy industry, and we look forward to working with Proserv and pooling our expertise.

“Together we will work to create and provide customisable ocean power solutions for subsea control systems that will revolutionise the offshore energy sector and the blue economy, while helping to decarbonise oil and gas production.”

Proserv CEO, Davis Larssen emphasised the importance of advancing clean, renewable energy solutions for subsea operations. He stated: “The future of subsea control systems must align with global sustainability goals, and by partnering with Mocean Energy, we are driving the development of robust, renewable power sources that can not only reduce operational emissions, but also improve efficiency and reliability in subsea environments.

“This agreement comes at a pivotal time for the Proserv business as we explore the integration of new technologies such as underwater drone technology for monitoring both wind and oil and gas, amongst other offerings to the wider energy industry, and Mocean Energy will deliver clear synergies in this new partnership.”

Vice President, Renewables, Paul Cook provides the feature story on the front cover of this month’s OGV Energy Renewable magazine. Paul gives an exclusive, in-depth interview to the title discussing the future of the offshore wind energy and how Proserv’s unique cable monitoring solutions will play a crucial role in ensuring the sustainable and efficient operation of offshore wind infrastructure, driving the transition to a greener future.

Major Norwegian underwater technology association FFU – Forening for Fjernstyrt Undervannsteknologi has kindly featured Proserv on the front cover of its latest DYP Magazine. Our two-page thought leader was co-authored by several of our senior Norway based colleagues and subsea experts – our CTO, Tore Erntsen, General Manager, Trondheim Mirza Duvnjak and General Manager, Stavanger Rune Christian Godejord.

Their piece is entitled “It’s time to think differently” and focuses on the need for operators to adopt fresh approaches and methodologies around their subsea operations – in particular the inherent problem of unreliable and obsolete control system electronics. It’s time for new strategies and to “think outside the box”. Our unique and impactful augmented controls technology (ACT) is highlighted as are some thought-provoking facts, collated by Kimberlite International Oilfield Research.
